Defenders of the theory claim that, behind such laudable objectives as \u201ceradicating poverty\u201d or \u201cstamping out hunger\u201d, there is a covert strategy in place to impose a New World Order dominated by \u201cthe ruling class\u201d. According to this logic, the pandemic and subsequent vaccination campaigns were part of an operation to reduce the planet\u2019s population and the fight against climate change was invented to diminish people\u2019s liberties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this is not true \u2013 or new. <strong>The foundations of the New World Order conspiracy theory date back to the middle of the 20th century<\/strong>. Now it has been reinvented to focus its efforts on misinforming the public, generating confusion surrounding the 2030 Agenda and promoting the idea that it is a plan to restrict people\u2019s liberties. One example of it is the distortion of the concept of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verificat.cat\/es\/fact-check\/la-ciudad-de-los-15-minutos-no-es-un-plan-para-prohibir-que-la-gente-salga-de-sus-barrios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> 15-minute city<\/a>, an initiative that advocates for an urban planning model in which the basic needs of each person are located within a 15-minute walk in order to reduce traffic and pollution. It did not take long for the claim that \u201cthey want to imprison us in our neighbourhoods\u201d to spread on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what exactly is the 2030 Agenda? How was it adopted? Who monitors its compliance? Is there any kind of secret interest behind this series of commitments?<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading60201_b0faff-15, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading60201_b0faff-15[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading60201_b0faff-15\"]{font-style:normal;}.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading60201_b0faff-15 mark.kt-highlight, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading60201_b0faff-15[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading60201_b0faff-15\"] mark.kt-highlight{font-style:normal;color:#f76a0c;-webkit-box-decoration-break:clone;box-decoration-break:clone;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;}.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading60201_b0faff-15 img.kb-inline-image, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading60201_b0faff-15[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading60201_b0faff-15\"] img.kb-inline-image{width:150px;vertical-align:baseline;}<\/style>\n<h2 class=\"kt-adv-heading60201_b0faff-15 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading60201_b0faff-15\"><strong>The 2030 Agenda: a long history<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We have to go back to the 1990s, a time when the UN organised and held a variety of international summits and conferences on human development, which gave rise to the famous eight<a href=\"https:\/\/research.un.org\/en\/docs\/dev\/2000-2015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Millennium Development Goals<\/a> (MDG).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MDG focused on issues such as eradicating poverty and, while progress was made on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.es\/noticia\/objetivos-de-desarrollo-del-milenio-se-cumplen-3-metas-antes-de-finalizar-2015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> some<\/a> of the goals, such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/06-02-2014-measles-deaths-reach-record-lows-with-fragile-gains-toward-global-elimination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the measles <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/06-02-2014-measles-deaths-reach-record-lows-with-fragile-gains-toward-global-elimination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vaccination<\/a>, others related to job insecurity remained largely unchanged. In the meantime, the climate issue gained international importance and the UN considered it important to include it in its roadmap for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.paho.org\/en\/topics\/agenda-sustainable-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> sustainable development<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The result was the 2030 Agenda<\/a>, which addressed both human development and environmental sustainability. These goals were decided on after numerous debates involving representatives of Member States, civil society, academics and business.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, they<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> ratified 169 targets grouped into 17 different overarching goals<\/a>. <strong>The individual countries, however, are not required to meet these goals<\/strong>, since<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitma.gob.es\/arquitectura-vivienda-y-suelo\/objetivos-desarrollo-sostenible\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> the SDGs are not legally binding<\/a>. This also means that <strong>the level of commitment varies by country<\/strong>. One of the predominant narratives is the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/factcheck-un-goals-idUSL1N36V2JW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> New World Order conspiracy theory<\/a>. The term was actually coined in 1919 by former US president<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boe.es\/biblioteca_juridica\/anuarios_derecho\/abrir_pdf.php?id=ANU-M-1993-10000900016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Woodrow Wilson in his negotiations for the Treaty of Versailles<\/a> to describe the subsequent creation of a league of nations (the predecessor of today\u2019s United Nations) that would to secure global peace after WWI.
